February 2025: The Power of Breath & Training Through Discomfort

In Monthly NewsletterFebruary 1, 202523 Minutes

Lori x Jeremy

Dear Gold’s Gym Family,

Though the shortest month, February is a powerful checkpoint in the fitness and health journey, bridging the enthusiasm of New Year’s resolutions with the commitment needed for long-term success. As winter lingers, it challenges discipline and motivation, making it a pivotal time to solidify habits rather than fall into seasonal slumps. With days gradually lengthening, the circadian rhythm begins adjusting, allowing for more energy and improved sleep cycles, both crucial for recovery and performance. February’s Snow Moon, often representing endurance and resilience, aligns perfectly with the mental toughness required to push through plateaus and stay consistent.

From a metabolic perspective, colder temperatures encourage brown fat activation, which enhances calorie burn and thermogenesis (heat generation), making workouts surprisingly beneficial. Additionally, February’s connection to love and self-care, especially with Valentine’s Day, offers a moment to shift focus toward self-love, mindful eating, and movement as a celebration of the body rather than just a means to an end. Whether through maintaining momentum, finding new ways to stay active, or embracing the balance of discipline and self-compassion, February is a reminder that progress is built in the spaces between motivation and perseverance. Stay with it, stay with us!

Jeremy and I have been diving deep into something we all do every second of every day but rarely think about—breathing. Sure, we focus on the breath in yoga, but in strength training, cardio, and everyday workouts? Not so much. We usually huff, puff, and assume that gasping for air means crushing it. But what if we told you how you breathe could make your workouts more efficient, your endurance stronger, and your recovery faster? It’s so weird that we don’t focus on breathing during our conscious hours.  Yes, breathing is automatic, and you don’t have to think about it, but maybe it is time that you do.   Life begins and ends with breath, but we take it for granted.  It’s everything! The breath is so powerful, so how about giving this some thought?  Hear us out.

Your hormonal balance determines how well you handle stress, recover from workouts, and sustain energy.

For the past year, we’ve been experimenting with nasal breathing—in and out through the nose only, across all our workouts. And let me tell you, it’s a game-changer. At moderate heart rates (65-75% of max), it’s pretty easy. But once you start pushing higher, it gets challenging. The good news? Like training any muscle, the more you practice, the better you get.

Why Bother?

The Benefits of Nasal Breathing in Training

It Keeps You Calm & Collected

All mammals breathe through their noses until they’re under duress, when they go into open-mouth, almost, or definitely, panic mode. Nasal breathing keeps you in a parasympathetic state (aka calm and controlled), while mouth breathing kicks you into fight-or-flight mode. Staying in control of your breath means staying in control of your performance.

More vigorous, More Efficient Workouts

Nasal breathing helps engage your diaphragm correctly, which means better core bracing for lifting (think of it as an internal weightlifting belt)—more stability = better strength gains.

Oxygen Efficiency = More Endurance

Your body absorbs oxygen on your exhale, so breathing out through your nose helps trap and recycle more oxygen, increasing endurance and stamina.

pH Balance & Fatigue Control

Mouth breathing dumps too much carbon dioxide too quickly, messing with your body’s pH and leading to dizziness, lightheadedness, and faster fatigue. Nasal breathing keeps your chemistry in check so you can train longer and recover faster.

Stay Hydrated Longer

Breathing through your mouth speeds up water loss, leading to quicker dehydration. If you’re training hard, every drop of hydration counts!

Better Sleep, Focus, and Recovery

Nasal breathing supports deeper sleep, sharper mental focus, and even better lung function. It can even help reduce the risk of exercise-induced asthma by filtering and warming the air before it hits your lungs.

How to Start?

Before you go trying to hit a new goal while strictly nasal breathing, let’s be honest.  It takes some time to adjust. If you’re sprinting, skiing moguls, cycling hard, crushing the stair climber, or lifting heavy, your body will need time to adapt.

Here’s a simple guideline: 180 – your age = your ideal heart rate to maintain nasal breathing. So, if you’re 40, aim to maintain nasal breathing at 140 bpm. Try it in your training for a week or two and see how your body responds.

This is just the tip of the iceberg of what proper breathing can do for your performance and overall well-being. Give it a shot, stay patient, and see how you go.  The benefits are enormous. If you are a mouth breather, exercising in nasal breath mode will help you become more comfortable breathing with your mouth shut when you sleep or even better when you’re on a plane.  It’s a more controlled and beautiful way to live.

Let’s move on to another subject.  As we continue our journey on the longevity road, another thing that we have been visiting is dealing with our brain and identifying Pain vs. Discomfort.

I, Lori, recently read an article by Hunter Williams on this very subject. It got me thinking about how our mental state (excuses) often gets in the way of how we train and optimize. We have come to the conclusion that this could be the key to unlocking our full potential at the gym, so we are digging into this, and perhaps you should, too.

Most people never reach their full potential, not because they’re in pain but because they can’t handle discomfort.  Pain is a signal that something is wrong.  It’s your body’s way of saying, “Stop! Back off! Pay attention!”  It’s an alarm warning you of injury, overtraining, or an underlying issue that needs immediate care.

Discomfort, on the other hand, is a signal of growth. It’s your body adapting, strengthening, and evolving, whether through an intense workout, a disciplined diet, or pushing through mental barriers.

Distinguishing Between Pain and Discomfort in Training

Understanding the difference is crucial for performance, longevity, muscle composition, and overall well-being.

•   Pain is a torn muscle. Discomfort is the soreness that comes from training hard.

•   Pain is an inflamed, sluggish metabolism. Discomfort is the hunger and energy shifts that come with shifting your diet for the better and metabolic adaptation.

•   Pain is burnout and chronic fatigue. Discomfort is the challenge of waking up early to train, even when it’s tough.

Most people avoid discomfort at all costs, choosing the easier path of instant gratification over the disciplined path of transformation. They skip workouts, avoid eating properly, give up on hard training, and quit when things get difficult.  This, of course, doesn’t apply to any of you, our gym members, but maybe you know someone like this.

But what if you could train yourself to embrace discomfort, even enjoy it?

The Science of Pain vs. Discomfort: Why High Performers Thrive

Pain and discomfort activate different pathways in the brain.

•  A 2016 study published in The Journal of Neuroscience found that acute pain triggers the brain’s pain matrix, signaling a threat to the body.

•  Discomfort, however, activates areas linked to motivation and endurance, including the prefrontal cortex and ventral striatum, the same regions responsible for mental toughness, goal setting, and resilience.

This is why elite athletes, military special forces, and high performers don’t just tolerate discomfort; they train their brains to thrive.

A 2018 study from Frontiers in Physiology found that endurance athletes have higher dopamine signaling, reduced stress hormone responses, and improved nervous system regulation, allowing them to push through discomfort with greater ease.

The Takeaway? The More Optimized Your Body Is, the Easier It Becomes to Push Through Discomfort.

How to Make Discomfort Your Ally (Not Your Enemy)

If you want to recover faster, train harder, and become the person who thrives under stress, you need to support your body by training your mind and fueling your body correctly.

When you train hard, you create micro-tears in muscle fibers. Your body needs to repair and strengthen these, which is where growth happens.

Hormone Optimization for Strength, Energy, & Endurance.  Don’t ignore this.

Your hormonal balance determines how well you handle stress, recover from workouts, and sustain energy.

Testosterone Optimization is critical for muscle growth, energy, and resilience. Low testosterone leads to fatigue, poor recovery, and decreased performance.

HGH or HGH Precursor Peptides (Tesamorelin, Ipamorelin, CJC-1295, no DAC) all boost sleep quality, tissue regeneration, and endurance.

Thyroid Support (Desiccated Thyroid)  regulates metabolism, energy levels, and fat oxidation, making fat loss and fasting easier.

When your hormones are optimized, your body becomes more efficient at handling discomfort and turning it into progress.

When was the last time you had your hormone levels tested? Perhaps never. Paying attention to these levels is an important aspect of understanding yourself, especially as we age.

Mitochondrial & Metabolic Peptides for Energy & Adaptation

The better your mitochondria function, the more energy your body has—which means discomfort becomes more tolerable. When your body efficiently produces energy, discomfort doesn’t feel like suffering; it feels like progress.

Turn Your Discomfort Into a Superpower!  Most people back down when things get complicated. They let fatigue, soreness, hunger, and stress dictate their actions.

But the people who succeed? They train their bodies and minds to embrace discomfort and give themselves the tools to make it easier.

What This Means for YOU

If you’re ready to recover faster, train harder and quickly adapt to stress. Optimize your hormones, so you have the energy, drive, and mental clarity to thrive.  Build a body that welcomes discomfort instead of running from it.

Get your bloodwork done. See where you are and work from there.  You can’t improve it if you don’t measure it.

The choice is simple: Stay comfortable and stagnant, or lean into discomfort and grow.

Your body was designed to adapt, so ensure it has everything it needs to do it at the highest level.

Why Everyone Should Get Their Hormones Checked: The Key to Longevity, Performance, and Optimal Health

Since 2020, Jeremy and I have made it a point to get our hormones checked regularly. Many people we know do a fantastic job complaining about how sluggish they feel, how unmotivated they are, and how they sleep terribly. They just complain constantly and spread negative energy.

If I hear one more person say, “This getting old thing sucks,” I’m going to scream. It makes me crazy that we hide behind the “getting old” excuse and do nothing about it.  Hormonal health is the foundation of energy, metabolism, mental clarity, muscle growth, fat loss, and overall well-being, yet it’s one of the most overlooked aspects of mainstream medicine.

Most assume that checking their hormone levels is only necessary after symptoms appear or when they reach middle age. The reality? Hormonal optimization should be a part of regular bloodwork from early adulthood.

Unfortunately, standard medical testing often ignores comprehensive hormone panels, leaving millions of people struggling with unexplained fatigue, weight gain, depression, brain fog, low libido, and poor recovery without ever realizing the root cause is hormonal imbalance.

Why Hormones Matter for Both Men and Women

Hormones are the chemical messengers that regulate nearly every function in your body. When they are balanced and optimized, you feel strong, energized, and mentally sharp. You experience sluggishness, weight gain, poor recovery, and even long-term disease risks when they are out of sync. Yet, most people don’t get their hormones checked until they already feel terrible. Traditional bloodwork only includes basic panels such as cholesterol, glucose, and liver enzymes but ignores key hormones that impact daily performance and longevity.

The Benefits of Being Hormonally Optimized

  • Increased Energy & Mental Clarity – Balanced hormones prevent chronic fatigue and brain fog.
  • Better Muscle Growth & Fat Loss – Testosterone, HGH, and thyroid hormones regulate metabolism and body composition.
  • Stronger Immune Function – Optimized hormones reduce inflammation and support immunity.
  • Improved Libido & Sexual Health – Healthy hormone levels improve sex drive, function, and reproductive health.
  • Faster Recovery & Longevity – Hormone balance supports better sleep, cellular repair, and anti-aging benefits.

Hormones That Should Be Regularly Tested

For Men:

Testosterone (Total & Free) – Critical for muscle mass, metabolism, libido, and cognitive function.

DHEA – A precursor to testosterone and key for anti-aging and adrenal function.

Estradiol (E2) is essential for cardiovascular and bone health. An imbalance can cause fatigue and weight gain. Hello—men need estrogen, too!

Cortisol – The stress hormone that, when chronically elevated, leads to burnout and metabolic dysfunction.

Thyroid Panel (TSH, Free T3, Free T4, Reverse T3) – These regulate metabolism, energy, and fat loss.

IGF-1 (Indicator of Growth Hormone Levels) – Key for recovery, endurance, and longevity.

For Women:

Estradiol (E2) – Regulates mood, metabolism, and cardiovascular health.

Progesterone – Essential for menstrual cycle health, mood stability, and sleep.

Testosterone (Yes, Women Need It Too!) – Supports muscle tone, energy, and libido.

DHEA – Important for stress resilience and hormone production.

Cortisol – High levels contribute to weight gain and adrenal dysfunction.

Thyroid Panel – Regulates metabolism, energy levels, and body composition.

Doctors rarely check these levels unless requested, so advocating for yourself and demanding comprehensive testing is essential.

At What Age Should You Start Checking Your Hormones?

Early 20s-30s: Establishing Baselines

•   Ideal for detecting early imbalances before they cause major issues.

•   Athletes, high-performers, and those with symptoms like low energy, poor recovery, or brain fog should check hormones early.

30s-40s: Catching the First Signs of Decline

•   Natural testosterone and estrogen production start declining in both men and women.

•   This is the ideal time to consider hormonal optimization strategies for longevity and performance.

40s-50s+: Reversing Age-Related Declines

•   Key hormones like testosterone, estrogen, DHEA, and growth hormone drop significantly.

•   Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) can restore youthful function and prevent age-related disease.

Debunking the Myths: Bioidentical Hormones vs. Synthetic Estrogen

For decades, mainstream medicine misled the public into believing that hormone replacement causes cancer when, in reality, this was based on flawed research using synthetic hormones, NOT bioidentical ones.

The Truth About Bioidentical Hormones:

•   Bioidentical hormones are molecularly identical to what the body naturally produces.

•   They do NOT increase cancer risk. Studies show they reduce the risk of heart disease, osteoporosis, and neurodegenerative diseases. Many men think that if their libido is high, then they are “good” to go and don’t need anything. Remember, just because you have a high libido doesn’t mean that you are hormonally optimized.

•   Unlike synthetic hormones (such as those used in the flawed Women’s Health Initiative study), bioidentical hormones work with your body’s natural rhythms, enhancing energy, performance, and longevity.

The Myth of Synthetic Estrogen

The Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) study led to widespread fear about hormone supplementation therapy, but what most people don’t realize is that the study used synthetic conjugated estrogens from pregnant horse urine (Premarin) and synthetic progestins, which do not behave like the body’s natural hormones.

Bioidentical hormones, however, are safe and beneficial, especially when appropriately monitored.

Why Hormonal Optimization is Critical for Your Health

The modern lifestyle destroys hormonal balance. Stress, poor sleep, environmental toxins, and nutrient deficiencies contribute to early decline.

But with the proper testing, nutrition, lifestyle changes, and (if needed) hormone therapy, you can:

  • Feel younger and more vibrant at any age.
  • Improve your metabolism and maintain a lean, strong physique.
  • Protect against cognitive decline, osteoporosis, and cardiovascular disease.
  • Optimize your energy levels, recovery, and performance.

And we’ll leave you with this…

January 2025: Strength, Recovery & The Truth About Alcohol

In Monthly NewsletterJanuary 1, 202531 Minutes

Lori x Jeremy

Dear Gold’s Gym Family,

I, Lori, and my husband, partner, and bestest friend ever, Jeremy, want to take a moment or a long time since this is a long newsletter, to wish you a very Happy New Year.  This newsletter is to be helpful, informative and we will get a little personal with you because, as part of your fitness community, we’re all about growth—not just in physical strength but in your overall wellness journey. So here it is: one of the things I dealt with over the years was my relationship with wine.

To be honest, from the time I was about 45 (I’m 65 now), I developed a habit of drinking one to two glasses of wine every day, sometimes with a cocktail thrown in twice a week. It became a routine.  After a long day at work, I’d get tipsy, settle into the evening, and not accomplish much else. At first, it seemed like a reasonable routine, but then the cycle became frustrating.

I would wake up at 2 a.m., unable to sleep, twiddling my thumbs thanks to the conversion by all our bodies to aldehyde which is a stimulant. Every morning, began to tell myself, “I’m never drinking again.” But by 7 p.m. after a long day of paperwork, spirituality, yoga and working out HARD, my daily routine of including wine would creep back in.

Finally, in 2023, I said, “enough,” and I stopped.

Let me tell you: it was a game changer. My energy soared, my sleep improved, and my mental clarity returned. We are not here to judge anyone.  We know alcohol is deeply ingrained in our social lives, and we’re surrounded by tempting advertising. Matter in fact, it’s glorified, but we want to share some data that might help you pause and reflect.

Drinking is responsible for 20,000 preventable cancer deaths annually in the US

— US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy

Why Gold's Gym? A Legacy of Strength and Community.

Teetotal Recall – what is teetotal you ask??? “Teetotal” refers to the practice of completely abstaining from alcoholic beverages. A person who follows this practice is known as a “teetotaler.”

US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy recently issued an advisory on alcohol, linking it to significant health risks:

  • Cancer Risks: Drinking is responsible for 20,000 preventable cancer deaths annually in the US, trailing only tobacco and obesity.
  • Impact on Women: Just two drinks per day can increase lifetime cancer risk by 22%, and 16.4% of breast cancer cases are linked to alcohol consumption.
  • Global Findings: The WHO (World Health Organization) states that any alcohol consumption increases risk for 31 serious health conditions.

The New Resolution

While 60% of Americans drink, many are rethinking alcohol’s effects on longevity, sleep, gut microbiome, and hormonal health. Even with these concerns, change is slow:

  • Alcohol sales are declining, with 25% of Americans joining last year’s Dry January challenge.
  • Younger generations are leading the way: 45% of Gen Z don’t drink at all, though they face the most social pressure to partake.

2025 is here, and it’s time to turn up the energy, set our sights high, and make this year our healthiest yet! 💪

Let’s dive in:

🎯 Strength & Recovery: The Dynamic Duo

This year, recovery is no longer a luxury—it’s a MUST. Here’s how the fitness community is stepping up:

🔥 Sauna Sessions: 69% of participants say saunas are their top recovery choice, and they also love ice baths (42%) and assisted stretching (50%). Try them all out and decide which works best for you, or maybe they all do.  Yes, we are working on a solution for the Sauna at Lake Ridge.  Thank you for your patience.  We know it’s not hot enough.  Getting some quotes now.

💪 Strength Training Reigns Supreme: Across all ages, building muscle is THE goal for 2025. It’s all about strength, longevity, and staying energized for whatever life throws your way.

Being in the gym the last few days, we have noticed more of our members on cardio, then perhaps during the warmer months.  In fact, this is the most cardio use we have seen over the last year.  Remember cardio is important so keep doing it but strength is KING. To train, strength before cardio is a good habit to get into.

Moderation Goes Mainstream

Regarding many aspects of our lives, abstinence may not be realistic for everyone, but moderation is becoming the new norm. Here’s how industry is responding:

  • Non-Alcoholic Alternatives: Brands like Athletic Brewing and Ritual Zero Proof are making zero-alcohol options trendy and delicious.

Healthier Beverages: Products infused with B vitamins, nootropics, and stress-reducing GABA are gaining popularity.  What’s a nootropic you ask?  Nootropics, often referred to as “smart drugs” or cognitive enhancers, are substances that aim to improve cognitive functions such as memory, creativity, focus, and overall mental performance.

  • Mindful Drinking Apps: Tools like Sunnyside and Ria Health are helping people cut back, often with insurance coverage.
  • Social Wellness Clubs: Venues like Othership are blending contrast therapy, community, and mocktails to create healthier social outlets.
  • Gold’s Gym: We are the number 1 most recognized brand in the industry.  Wear you Gold’s Gym membership like a badge of honor. When you tell your friends and family that you are a Gold’s Gym member you should feel power, strength, love, and success.  We are the epitome of fitness and optimization, and we have a long history that proves. It.

What’s the Takeaway?

Alcohol’s role in social life isn’t going away anytime soon, but we can make changes that prioritize our health. Whether it’s moderating, going alcohol-free, or finding new ways to unwind, there’s power in taking control of what serves us best.

For me, quitting alcohol gave me a new lease on life—and I hope this inspires you to consider what positive changes might look like for you. As always, your health and wellness are our top priority at Gold’s Gym, and we’re here to support you every step of the way.

It’s time to turn up the energy, set your sights high, and make this year your healthiest yet!

To keep you motivated, supported, and inspired every step of the way. Whether you’re here to build muscle, lose weight, gain weight, focus on recovery, or find your fitness groove, we’ve got the tools, classes, and community to make it happen.

🎉 Our own GLP-1 Receptor Analog & Peptide Journey: Living Big, Energized, and Ageless

We know we spoke about this a lot in our last newsletter, but you are a Gold’s Gym member, and you need to be “in the know” and understand what is happening to our industry, health and wellness and the peptide journey is becoming very mainstream.

Once again, allow us to give you some details of our journey with GLP-1 RAs and peptides. It’s all about feeling incredible, living long, and thriving—so let’s dive in!

The GLP-1 RA Lowdown: What Are They?

  • GLP-1 RAs (glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists) are a class of medications originally designed to manage blood sugar in people with diabetes. But surprise—they come with a cascade of extra benefits! By regulating blood sugar, reducing appetite, and even improving liver and kidney function, these game-changers are shaking up the wellness world.

Spotlight on GLP-1RAs:

  • Tirzepatide: This dual-action GLP-1 not only controls blood sugar but also reduces hunger, making it a top choice for weight management. Bonus: it’s shown to improve inflammation and cardiovascular health!
  • Retatrutide: The next-gen GLP-1 RA with triple action. It tackles glucose regulation, appetite suppression, and lipid metabolism, offering a comprehensive approach to health optimization.

We aren’t focusing on Semaglutide, brand name Ozempic, although it has its place too, but we have preferred the two aforementioned. Results for us? Insane energy, fat loss, reduced inflammation, improved flexibility (yes, we swear), and strength gains. It’s like hitting the wellness jackpot!

Other Peptides:

Let’s talk other peptides and yes, we know we discussed this in our last newsletter, but this is important for you to know about because it is available —the molecules that are making a massive impact on our lives and ones that you may want to consider for yourself. Peptides are short chains of amino acids that act like messengers, helping your body perform its best at the cellular level. More than 3000 peptides have been isolated in our bodies and the synthetic fabrication of them, beginning with the first, “insulin”, dating back to 1923, can help immensely when introduced to our bodies to assist our bodies when our bodies may be under duress greater than what our bodies can take care of to heal ourselves.

  1. GHK-CU: Known as the “fountain of youth” peptide, it’s amazing for skin regeneration, wound healing, and overall cellular repair. And oh yeah, hair growth as well.
  2. BPC-157: This peptide is your body’s repair ninja, targeting inflammation and accelerating healing, especially for joints and muscles.
  3. NAD+: The cellular energizer, NAD+ boosts mitochondrial function, giving you that unstoppable, “energizer bunny” feel.
  4. Ipamorelin/Tesamorelin Combo: The ultimate duo for growth hormone optimization, muscle recovery, and fat loss.

6.  SLU-PP-332 –30 minutes before a workout. Hello energy, lift strength, endurance, stamina and happiness.

The choice is yours:

Jeremy and I are on a mission.  To play the longevity game hard. Our goal is to live as long as we can, as healthy as we can.

We want to:

  • Jump out of bed every morning ready to crush the day.
  • Crush workouts, ski the toughest slopes, adown power yoga everyday, settle into meditation with ease and enjoy the dance floor at music festivals.
  • Wear whatever we want and know that it fits.

Keep up with our grandchildren and have the energy to outlast theirs!

What we have noticed, having experience with each of the above is:

  • Insane energy and stamina.
  • Strength and flexibility gains that blow our minds.
  • Inflammation down to zero, making recovery a breeze.
  • Mental clarity and sharpness that help us better serve YOU—our incredible members, colleagues, and students.

What is standing in the way for all of us?????

Pollutants, toxins, food additives, alcohol, poor sleep, ridiculous eating habits., etc. Let’s face it, it’s not totally your fault if you are not where you want to be – it’s a lot of society’s and a little bit of yours.   We, as a society, have developed habits without even knowing the harm. Perhaps it is time to further educate yourself.

How Much Food Do We Really Need?

One surprising revelation from our own journey is just what kind of  food our bodies actually need—especially in a world of Big Macs and bottomless fries. Thanks to GLP-1 RAs, and our experience with them, we’ve learned to truly listen to our body’s hunger cues and understand if they are real or not. If you’re not a pro bodybuilder crushing 6,000 calories and 280 grams of protein a day (and yes, there are a lot of you in our spaces), you probably don’t need a lot of the calories that you are consuming but rather better choices.

Yes, we do need protein— a lot of it and more than you think. At the same time, we’re also a carbohydrate-rich society, and cutting back on processed junk while prioritizing lean protein is a total game-changer. Yes, you can crush your workout at the gym in an hour but what are you doing the other 23 hours of the dsy?

Your Takeaway

Let our journey be a revelation to you—not just about what we eat but how we feel. Whether you’re curious about GLP-1RAs, other peptides, or just looking to optimize your health, we’re here to share, inspire, and guide you toward your goals.

Alright, folks, buckle up because we’re diving into the wild world of the FDA. Respectfully (and with a touch of humor), do you know how long it takes to get something FDA-approved?

90 months. Yep, that’s 7.5 years. And that’s just for the trials. Add in the mountain of red tape, and we’re talking 10-15 years to bring something to market.

But here’s the kicker: often, researchers already know these agents are safe well before the end of a trial. So why does it take so long?

The Reasons

  • Bureaucratic Butt-Covering: When your job revolves around government oversight, “CYA” is the mantra of the day.
  • Red Tape for Days: Layers of rules and regulations slow progress to a crawl.

The result? This glacial pace isn’t just frustrating—it’s costing lives.

What’s in the Pipeline?

We all know most of what the FDA greenlights is… less than inspiring. Big Pharma churns out symptom-covering meds faster than we can count. But every now and then, something revolutionary sneaks into the pipeline.

Take MDMA-Assisted Psychotherapy for example:

  • After years of trials, it reached Phase 3.
  • Results? Two-thirds of participants no longer qualified for a PTSD diagnosis after just THREE sessions.
  • Safety? Off the charts.

So did it get approved? Nope.

Why? An FDA advisory panel (featuring experts like… a sociologist 🤦‍♂️) decided to shut it down. Meanwhile, thousands of PTSD sufferers—many of them veterans—continue to suffer or worse.

And now, the same slow-motion circus is happening with Retatrutide – the peptide that is in our stack and is a game changer.  We just can’t follow the FDA on this miracle as it has not been approved yet.

This groundbreaking GLP-1 agonist could redefine health optimization. But the earliest approval isn’t expected until 2027. That’s two more years of waiting—and who knows what might derail it in the meantime?

So, What Can We Do?

The reality is, if you’re waiting for FDA approval to get the green light on cutting-edge therapies, you’ll be waiting… and waiting… and waiting. But here’s the thing: there are ways to stay informed, empowered, and ahead of the curve.  Do your research – it’s your body, it’s the only place you have to live.

The Bottom Line

The FDA moves slower than a sloth on vacation, but that doesn’t mean we stop seeking knowledge and options. Stay informed, stay curious, and most importantly, stay proactive about your health.

To Longevity And Living BIG!

Onto the Gym:

Guys, it’s hard to keep up.  We as users of the equipment are hard on it.  Pads rip and then we are depending on the very, very, very few people that have the talent to replace our pads.  It’s not like we just go next door or call 12 people who are vying for our business to get pads fixed.  Newsflash – they don’t exist.  So, if you are a great seamstress with an industrial sewing machine and want to make a fortune, the business of gym equipment pad replacement is calling your name, and you’re hired.  If you ever see Carl, a gentleman who has been taking care of our pads, on the floor replacing them please thank him because he’s all we got.  We lose him and we are in trouble. Seriously.  Be patient with this please we really do our best.

The temperature. Yes, for some of us it is freezing in here especially in the cold winter mornings.  Be prepared.  Right now, I’m staying in my sweater and hat.  If we turn on the fans, members complain.  If we turn off the fans, members complain.  So instead of us being ping pong balls the fans stay on.  Wear a sweater and we love you.

Ok so I, Lori am 110 and strong, but not so strong to re-rack the 12,000 pounds you left on the machine that you walked away from. Like really?  Give us a break. Re-rack your friggin’ weights.  You would never go to Venice Gold’s Gym and not see every single member re-rack their weights.

Now let’s visit the most powerful tool of all – OUR PHONES.  Ok, stay on your phones all day. We love them.  Your phone is an extension of your arm.  But doing a set, staying on the piece of equipment and taking a break for 12 hours between sets as you scroll on your phone is just not OK.  This is Gold’s Gym.  What is it that you may not understand about others “working in”?  Dudes, like get real. Jump off the piece and let someone work in if needed with grace, attention, and respect.

Speaking of Gold’s Gym Venice – THE MECCA – where our roots are.  If you haven’t been, it’s the absolute coolest place in the world.  Members respect the old equipment that is rusted, plates that aren’t perfect, heat, no air, sweat and everyone loves it – it’s just part of the vibe and culture and that’s kind of what we stand for.   It shows passion, and use, and love, and knowing.  We have equipment in here from 1991 – all the German Made and Body Masters are literally 34 years old, and we just can’t get rid of it because it’s the best!  Speaking of 34 years, 2025 will be our 30th anniversary as gym owners.  Jeremy and I started teaching group classes and working out the day the gym opened in 1991 on the other side of the shopping center in Lake Ridge when it was Ironworks Gym.  In 1995 the owner, Pleasant Lewis took down his signs and became a Gold’s Gym Franchisee.  That’s when we became his partner and bought him out in 1998, so here’s to 30 years.

So what happened in the gym this past couple of weeks.  Members and our team are happy getting in their workouts with fervor.

Once member today loaded the leg press with 1260 pounds.  Yes that’s one thousand, two hundred and sixty friggin’ pounds.  It was a mind blower and then when I, Lori, went up to him to bow down to him and tell him that he was amazing, and he was so humble.  He said –“thank you so much, it took me awhile to get there”.  Ya think?  I love our members.

Two of our two long time members came up to us today to say hi.  One aged 80 and the other 78 and they look amazing.  Seriously ripped.  It was enlightening and so inspiring. Members since we were on the other side of the shopping center from the beginning!  Joe Kramer our long time personal trainer at Lorton is 80 and he doesn’t look at day over 55.  Go Joe.

Kelly had 45 people in Drishti Beats Yoga.  It was packed and everyone left feeling connected, amazing, grounded and in bliss.  Yoga is a must – we all need it.

Our staff is so nice!  So engaged! So willing to help everyone.  Please be nice to them and to each other.  Please re-rack your weights, and please wipe down your equipment.  Please don’t cancel your membership as that is, well, just dumb. Please don’t quit on yourself and this is the best investment you will ever give yourself.   We want you in here.  Also please don’t join and then not come, as that is just not cool.  Do yourself a favor and stay connected.  Forever.  Working out is a way of life.  Just do it and get it done.

Remember we are not corporate.  We are right here.  E mail us for anything.  We are available at any time, listening, and happy to hear from you:  Lori@lowellmgmnt.com,  Jeremy@lowellmgmnt.com.  So write to Jeremy if you have something to complain about and write to Lori for all the positive comments.

With so much love, light and gratitude to our Gold’s Gym Family

— Lori & Jeremy Lowell

Why Gold's Gym? A Legacy of Strength and Community.

Gold’s Gym is more than a name—it’s a legacy. Founded in 1965, Gold’s Gym has grown into the most recognized fitness brand in the world, synonymous with strength, transformation, and community. Here in Lake Ridge and Lorton, we take that legacy to heart.

For over 30 years, we and our managing partners, Joe Harrison and Alec Lowell, have proudly owned and operated our gyms. Unlike corporate-owned locations, we are locally operated and dedicated to your success. Every decision we make centers around enhancing your experience, improving our facilities, and supporting your fitness journey. As a community-driven team, we are here for you, committed to helping you achieve your goals every step of the way, and we genuinely care about you. Let’s not forget about our fantastic staff. We are incredibly fortunate to have a team of co-workers who have been by our side for years, embodying loyalty, dedication, and a shared passion for our mission. Their unwavering commitment is the foundation of our Gold’s Gym family.

Take Michaela Conigliaro, who has been with us for an astounding 30 years. Michaela joined our team when our Lake Ridge location was in a different part of the shopping center. Over the decades, she has been our rock, serving as our lead administrator and supporting our team with grace and consistency.
And then there’s Kelly Shelton, who has been with us for 18 years. For several years, Kelly has played nearly every role imaginable—personal Trainer, GGX Instructor, Drishti Beats Yoga Teacher, GGX Director, and General Manager. Her versatility, dedication, and passion have left a lasting impact on every corner of our organization.
These stories are just a glimpse of the incredible dedication that defines our team. Each reflects the love and energy we all pour into these gyms daily.

On a personal note, these gyms also hold cherished memories for Lori. I will never forget the day I found out I was pregnant with Alec. I had just taken an at-home pregnancy test before teaching a step aerobics class at Lake Ridge. Ten minutes into the class, I glanced at the test stick and saw the positive result—Alec was on his way! Fast-forward, Alec has grown up in these gyms and now serves as our managing partner and general manager at Lorton.

Our team isn’t just a staff; we’re a family, emotionally invested in creating a space where you can thrive. We are committed to you and your success—always. Trust that you are in caring, capable hands.

Our mission is to offer you a space to work out and create a holistic environment that supports every aspect of your health and wellness. So much is happening in the fitness and wellness sector, and keeping up is hard. Hopefully, we can provide some valuable information to enhance your fitness and wellness journey. So, let’s dig in a little.

The Future of Health: GLP-1 Medications and Peptides

The world of health and wellness is evolving, and so are we. GLP-1 medications like Tirzepitide and Semaglutide are revolutionizing how millions of Americans approach weight loss and overall health. These medications regulate appetite and blood sugar, helping individuals make small but powerful changes in their diet and exercise routines.

Exciting News from Gold’s Gym: Transform Your Health with GLP-1 Medications!

We’re thrilled to announce that Gold’s Gym has partnered with NextGen 360MD to provide information and prescriptions for cutting-edge GLP-1 solutions like Tirzepitide and Semaglutide. These medications transform how people approach weight loss, weight management, and overall health.

Let’s clear the air—while medications like Ozempic initially faced criticism due to overprescription, the medical community has refined their use to achieve tremendous results when administered responsibly. This is not just about weight loss—it’s about optimizing your health, resetting your relationship with food, and energizing your life.

If you’re curious about what these medications can do for you, why not set up a consultation with NextGen 360MD? Learning more about these solutions and how they could align with your health and fitness goals is an easy step.

Lori’s Personal Journey with GLP-1s

As the owner of Gold’s Gym, I (Lori) want to share my life-changing experience.

Why did I start using Tirzepitide, a GLP-1 analog receptor? Not for weight loss—I didn’t need that (well, everyone wants to lose 5 lbs, I suppose). But my A1c (blood sugar) levels were running high for years. Despite no other concerning markers in my blood work, cutting sugar, and even giving up alcohol, my A1c continued to rise. At 6.3, I was teetering on the edge of a diabetes diagnosis (6.4 and above is considered diabetic). I was fearful of my longevity, being 65, the correlation between high blood sugar and Alzheimer’s, and all the other factors that had me concerned.

My doctor recommended Tirzepitide, and within four months, it completely changed my life:

  • Blood Sugar Success: My glucose levels, which previously ranged from 101 to 126 (above the normal range of 99), now sit comfortably between 76 and 90. This is a massive shift, and I’m ecstatic about the results!
  • Incredible Energy: I feel a surge of vitality every day. I’m more motivated than ever to hit my cardio sessions, crush my strength training, and flow deeply into my yoga practice.
  • Mindful Eating: I’ve developed a healthier relationship with food—I pause and think before reaching for snacks or opening the fridge.

This isn’t just a medication—it’s been a game-changer for how I train, eat, and live. I love how it makes me feel, and I couldn’t be more excited to share my story with all of you.

Why Consider GLP-1s?

Over 15 million Americans are already benefiting from GLP-1 medications, which work by regulating appetite and blood sugar. These medications help with weight loss, encourage healthier eating habits, and boost energy for workouts and daily life.

At Gold’s Gym, we’re committed to empowering you with the best tools to achieve your health goals. Whether you want to manage your weight, improve your blood sugar, or feel more energized, these medications could be the missing link.

Reach out to NextGen 360MD to learn more about these innovative medications and how they can help you take control of your health. Set an appointment to discuss your goals and explore the possibilities for a healthier, stronger you. You should have received an email from them.

But it doesn’t stop there—the peptide world is exploding. Many of our serious strength-training members are already familiar with peptides, but we believe it’s time to make this knowledge accessible to everyone. Peptides can support muscle growth, recovery, and overall health, giving you another tool to take charge of your wellness journey. Stay tuned for more educational sessions in the coming months!

A peptide is a short chain of amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins. Peptide bonds link these amino acids together, and the chain typically contains fewer than 50 amino acids. Peptides occur naturally in the body and are vital in various biological processes.

How Peptides Work

Peptides function as signaling molecules in the body, meaning they communicate with cells and tissues to trigger specific biological responses. Different peptides have different functions, such as aiding in hormone production, immune system regulation, and tissue repair. Because they are smaller than proteins, peptides are more easily absorbed by the body and can interact with specific receptors to produce targeted effects.

Peptides are diverse and can be classified based on their functions, including:

1. Therapeutic Peptides: Used in medicine for specific health benefits, such as regulating hormones or treating conditions like diabetes.

• Example: Insulin, a peptide hormone, regulates blood sugar levels.

2. Cosmetic Peptides: Commonly used in skincare products to promote collagen production and improve skin health.

• Example: Collagen peptides help improve skin elasticity and hydration.

3. Performance and Recovery Peptides: These are used in fitness and sports to promote muscle growth, fat loss, and recovery.

• Example: BPC-157 promotes tissue repair and reduces inflammation.

CJC-1295 or Ipamorelin stimulates growth hormone release.

Potential Benefits of Peptides

Peptides have gained attention for their potential to:

  • Promote muscle growth and repair
  • Enhance fat loss
  • Improve skin elasticity and reduce wrinkles
  • Aid in recovery from injury
  • Boost immune system function
  • Improve cognitive function and memory
  • Support joint and tissue repair

Peptides in Modern Medicine and Wellness

With advancements in biotechnology, peptides are increasingly used in personalized medicine and wellness programs. Their ability to target specific bodily functions makes them a promising tool for treating diseases, enhancing fitness performance, and improving overall health. For example:

  • GLP-1 receptor agonists like Semaglutide and Tirzepatide are peptides that help regulate appetite and blood sugar levels, aiding in weight loss and diabetes management.
  • Thymosin Alpha-1 is a peptide used to support immune function.

Why Are Peptides Gaining Popularity?

Peptides are highly specific in their action, meaning they often have fewer side effects than broader treatments. In the fitness and wellness world, peptides are gaining recognition for their ability to enhance recovery, optimize performance, and improve quality of life in a targeted, natural way.

If you’re considering peptides, always consult with a healthcare provider to understand their potential benefits and risks based on your specific needs. NextGen MD360 can provide a great segue.

4. Post-COVID Growth in the Fitness Industry

Since the pandemic, the fitness and wellness industry has seen incredible growth. People prioritize their health like never before, and Gold’s Gym remains at the forefront of this movement. It would be remiss of us not to inform you of what is going on out there and what is available to you.

As the most recognized fitness brand in the world, Gold’s Gym continues to lead with innovative programs, world-class facilities, and a focus on holistic health. By choosing us, you’ve aligned yourself with a community that’s as committed to your success as you are. Thank you for trusting us to be a part of your fitness journey.

The most unfortunate thing is that pre-covid fitness captured 20% of the American population. Today, it stays at 20%. 80% of our population still do not engage in any fitness activity. Consider yourself lucky to have taken the step to belong to a fitness-focused community. Please think twice before you cancel your membership; it is better to show up for yourself and immerse and take control of your health.

Brokenhearted

The state of cardiovascular health is shockingly poor, and everybody’s at risk.

  1. 48% of US adults have hypertension, with 41% unaware.
  2. Heart failure deaths increased by 906% among people <45 in the last decade.
  3. Strokes are up 7.8% over the same period, jumping 14.6% among 18–44-year-olds.

And while overall heart attacks have fallen since 2019, incidence among young people has shot up 66% — with a fifth of attacks now occurring under age 40.

Coming of age. Heart disease is America’s #1 killer, but 80–90% of cases are preventable.

Striking younger, experts attribute adverse outcomes to poor lifestyle shifts. A lethal combination of inactivity and ultra-processed foods is fueling chronic disease.

Exacerbating the issue, factors like air pollution, microplastics, birth control pills, drug use, and COVID-19 can all make young people more susceptible.

Big picture. A broadened patient load is challenging an already-strained system.

Currently spending $400B+ on care, US CVD-related healthcare costs are expected to triple to $1.3T by 2050. Tirzepetide GLP-1s are being fast-tracked to combat heart disease.

5. Recovery: The Next Frontier

Recovery is essential to wellness, and we’re excited to bring new recovery modalities to our community. In early 2025, MergeCryo Center is opening at our Lake Ridge location, offering state-of-the-art cryotherapy to support recovery, reduce inflammation, and boost overall performance.

Recovery doesn’t stop there—modalities like red light therapy, hyperbaric chambers, and other advanced techniques are gaining traction, and we’re exploring ways to integrate these into our offerings. Your health is our priority, and we’re dedicated to providing tools that help you feel and perform at your best.

6. Introducing DotFit Nutritional Products

We’re thrilled to announce that we’ll soon carry DotFit nutritional products, a brand designed specifically for fitness enthusiasts. What sets DotFit apart is its commitment to quality—all its supplements are third-party white paper tested, ensuring the highest level of safety and efficacy.

DotFit products, from protein powders to vitamins and performance supplements, are a fantastic addition to your fitness regimen. We’re proud to partner with a company that shares our commitment to supporting your goals with integrity and excellence.
